Goal A - Students will be able to compose
for particular audiences and purposes
Example: I finally hit my breaking point thanks to all
the voices in my head. I felt like giving up until one day I was watching TV.
What would seem like just a normal commercial to some people was actually a secret
message for me, with directions on how to get rid of the crazy voices in my
head. I was so happy I could finally make them go away; I didn’t even realize
how crazy it was for the TV to be talking to me!
This was the first time I ever wrote a diary entry, so
I had to adjust my writing styles for the type of audience
that would be reading it. I used informal language
because I knew normal people would be reading it,
not scholars or professionals. Writing informally
also went along with the purpose of my writing,
This was not meant to only inform people but it
was supposed to entertain and even help others empathize with the person suffering.
Goal B - Students will be able to compose using
language and conventions appropriate to genre
A delusion is a firmly held belief that a person has despite clear evidence that it is not true. There are four types: ¨Delusions of Persecution: The belief that others are out to get them ¨Delusions of Reference: The belief that a neutral event has special, or personal meaning. For example, a person with schizophrenia may believe that a billboard is communicating just with them ¨Delusions of Grandeur: The belief that one is a famous or important figure ¨Delusions of Control: The belief that ones thoughts or actions are being controlled by an outside force
For this genre I made a brochure, so I had to
change my style of writing to make the reader
actually think they were reading a real brochure.
I made my writing short but informative. I also
used bullet points to help me do this, and to
help make the information clearer.
Goal C - Students will be able to read, select, and use
evidence critically to formulate and support arguments
The authors, Ascher-Svanum H, Faries DE, Zhu B,
Ernst FR, Swartz MS, and Swanson JW, conducted much of the research and their
findings can be read in the article Medication adherence and long-term functional outcomes in the treatment of schizophrenia in usual care. In this article an experiment was conducted that followed
many people suffering from schizophrenia.
The final results proved that patients who did
not adhere to their medication had poorer functional outcomes than those who
did adhere.
This research may be correct, but it does not
take into account other treatment types to go along with the use of medication.
This was part of my literature review that I used
for my professional genre. To write this I had to
read a research article, pick out important
information and arguments made, then us
the information I have gathered in my own research to make an argument against them.
Goal D - Students will be able to interpret and compose in
For this genre, even though it was print, I had to set
it up very differently than I usually do for papers I have
to write. I did not have to write paragraphs either and
I only had short sentences to describe each event,
but that is how a timeline is supposed to be. I
also had to make it look nice and make it look like an actual timeline by drawing and using textboxes and adding color.
Goal E - Students will be able to describe and apply
appropriate writing processes, both individually
and in collaborative contexts
This experiment followed twenty-seven subjects over a six week period of time. I used sensitive search strategies, based on a combination of characteristics to locate this randomized trial sample. The subjects were split into three groups of nine randomly. Group one was given just the psychological rehabilitation treatment. These nine people received regularly scheduled meetings with one psychologist. They were also all put in a self-help group together. Group two was given just antipsychotic medication. Group three received the same psychosocial treatment as group one, as well as the same antipsychotic medications the subject in group two received. For each group of subjects a data analysis was conducted on their previous diagnosis and medical treatments. Computerized administrative data was used to keep track of each person’s medications and the amount of time spent in therapy.
This was part of my first draft in my professional
genre. I thought it was okay, but after having a
meeting with Dr. Sherry where he reviewed all of my professional genre I learned that it was wrong. I have to adjust some things and make it better but without him reviewing this for me I would have kept all of my mistakes and would not have improved.

Below are the goals for my Foundations of College Writing Course.
For each goal, I've selected work that demonstrates how I addressed that goal during the course,
and explained how, citing specific examples from my work.
